From a legacy jQuery stack to a modern affiliate engine - with zero SEO equity lost

FlyCheapAlways is a flight-and-hotel comparison site that has run from Atlanta since 2018, earning affiliate commission when visitors book travel. By early 2026 the site still worked - but it had quietly become impossible to improve. We rebuilt it from a hand-authored jQuery site into a fast, templated Eleventy platform, and carried every page of its Google ranking history through the migration. Here is exactly how, and why each decision was made.

At a glance

  • Industry: Travel / affiliate
  • The challenge: A working but unmaintainable legacy site with growing technical-SEO debt
  • What we did: Full rebuild on Eleventy + Nunjucks + Tailwind, migrated in production, redirects mapped before launch
  • The outcome: A site one person can maintain in minutes, faster pages, correct search signals, and no lost rankings

The problem: a working site that had become impossible to improve

Every page was hand-authored HTML with the navigation, footer, and <head> copied into it. Changing a single email address meant editing more than a dozen files by hand. Affiliate links - the thing the business actually runs on - were pasted individually across every page, so swapping a partner was a site-wide find-and-replace and a prayer that none were missed.

Underneath, the technical-SEO debt was steadily costing rankings:

  • A 2018-era jQuery and Bootstrap Material Kit stack shipping roughly 400KB of render-blocking, largely unused CSS and JavaScript - poison for Core Web Vitals.
  • The homepage canonical tag pointed at /index.html instead of the clean root URL, splitting authority on the single most important page.
  • Every page - including the homepage - declared og:type: "article", sending wrong signals to Facebook and LinkedIn.
  • No structured data anywhere, so the site was invisible to Google's rich results and to AI answer engines.
  • No privacy, cookie, or terms pages, and no FTC affiliate disclosure - a trust and compliance gap that quality raters notice.

Why rebuild a site that still made money?

Because "it works" and "it can grow" are different things. The site earned, but every improvement - a new landing page, a swapped partner, a headline test - cost hours of manual, error-prone editing, so improvements simply stopped happening. The rebuild wasn't cosmetic; it was about making the site cheap to change, so it could finally be optimized on an ongoing basis instead of frozen in place.

The strategy: Eleventy and a single source of truth

We chose Eleventy - the same static-site generator we recommend to clients - for one reason above all: it ships zero framework JavaScript by default, so pages are fast out of the box. On top of it we built the change that mattered most, and it was invisible to users:

  • One file for every affiliate link. All 50+ partner URLs moved into a single data file, read at build time everywhere they appear. Swapping a partner dropped from a 30-minute grep to a 10-second edit.
  • One file for brand identity. Email, socials, and domain live in one place - change once, propagate everywhere.
  • Schema that adapts per page type. The base layout emits the right structured data automatically: WebSite + SearchAction on the homepage (enabling the sitelinks searchbox), Article markup on blog posts, and TravelAgency organization data sitewide - with no JSON copy-pasted between files.

Migrating without losing a single ranking

This is the part most redesigns get wrong. Rankings belong to URLs, so before we retired one old page we mapped every URL that carried search equity and configured a 301 redirect on Firebase Hosting to its replacement. We fixed the homepage canonical to resolve to the clean root, corrected the Open Graph types so each page describes what it actually is, and migrated page-by-page in production so the live site never went dark. The result was a completely rebuilt stack with its Google equity carried forward intact.

What we built

  • A real blog system. 25+ posts migrated to Markdown with affiliate links resolved at build time, auto-generated related posts, and an RSS feed for syndication and Google Discover.
  • The pages a credible business needs. New about, contact, privacy, cookie, and terms pages with proper GDPR, CCPA, and FTC affiliate-disclosure language - trust signals, not just legal cover.
  • Content that targets real demand. An evergreen Atlanta events guide aimed at a high-intent local query cluster the old site missed entirely.
  • A fixed revenue path. We replaced a broken booking widget that had been silently showing a blank box with a working one, so the homepage's primary conversion point actually functions.

The results

FlyCheapAlways went from a site that was painful to touch to one a single person can maintain in minutes - swap an affiliate, publish a post, or change a contact detail in one place and it propagates everywhere at build time. It ships far less code, sends correct signals to Google and social platforms, is eligible for rich results and AI citation for the first time, and kept every page of its ranking history through the migration. It is the same legacy-to-modern rebuild we run for clients with slow Wix, Squarespace, or hand-coded sites - we just happened to do it on our own property first.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can you redesign a website without losing Google rankings?

Yes - the rankings live with the URLs, not the design. We map every URL that carries search equity, add a 301 redirect to its replacement, keep canonicals and titles intact, and fix any wrong signals before retiring the old pages. Google transfers the authority within a crawl cycle. On FlyCheapAlways we rebuilt the whole stack and kept every ranking.

  • Why move off jQuery and Bootstrap to Eleventy?

An old jQuery/Bootstrap site ships hundreds of KB of render-blocking, mostly-unused code that drags down Core Web Vitals. Eleventy outputs static HTML with no framework runtime, so pages load faster and are far cheaper to maintain.

  • What is the single-source-of-truth data pattern?

Values used in many places - affiliate links, contact details, brand info - live in one file and are read everywhere at build time. Change it once, it updates site-wide. It's the highest-ROI decision for any affiliate or multi-page site.

  • Will a rebuild break my live site while it's in progress?

No. We migrate page-by-page in production - new templated pages go up alongside the old ones, and we switch and redirect each as it's ready, so the site never goes dark.
